Photos

I snapped this photo at 2009's Northwestern Dance Marathon (an annual 30-hour charity dance), which raised $576,000 for Project Kindle - a foundation which holds camps for youth affected by HIV/AIDS. As the event ended and celebratory balloons rained upon the dancers, this 15-year-old camper held up the ceremonial check. His expression was certainly less gleeful than many of the other campers and dancers, but reflected the importance of the charity.

When my editor heard about the recent rescue of several bears and bocats by a Northern Nevada wildlife sanctuary, she sent me two hours into the desert me to profile the facility. I shot and edited this video to accompany the profile, which was used as the A1 centerpiece the day after I went there.

Flash

For six months after police arrested a Northwestern student for providing alcohol to another student who died of alcohol poisoning, I covered all of the court proceedings. The case, like many other legal matters, became complicated and confusing - especially to college students. I created this Flash timeline to go with an article I wrote on a status hearing (the 4/17 point on the timeline), so readers could visually see how the case had unfolded.

Group Multimedia Packages

Life after Ryan Field
This Flash package, produced with two other students for a Medill class but also partially published in The Daily Northwestern, focused on NU football stars who go on to play in the NFL. It featured a short written story, breakout information on the three players headed to the NFL this year, a video interview with one of the players and a map showing where former NU football stars are now.

Shelter closing creates crisis for homeless
For our final project in a different Medill class, three other students and I focused on the last homeless shelter on the north side of Chicago, which was in danger of being shut down. We each wrote a separate 1,000 word story on an aspect of the topic and collaborated on a video. The link above contains my story and the video.
