Taken to accompany my coverage of an annual Evanston bicycling event (and the larger topic of cycling in the city), this photo shows the Glaser family, led by 8-year-old Natalie, biking down the busiest street in the city.

I arrived early to Grant Park on Nov. 4, 2008, to save a good spot to see the Barack Obama's speech, which I was sent to cover. But with my spot saved, I went to find another story. This man, 42-year-old Eric Terpstra, and others who traveled from other countries became the story.

After covering a hearing for a former Northwestern student accused of providing alcohol to a minor student who died of alcohol poisoning, I raced outside to retrieve my camera from where I left it in the snow. While the former student and his father tried to avoid me, I managed to get this photo of them as they left the courthouse.

A few hours after a massive fire destroyed 22 vacant apartment buildings, my editor dispatched me to the scene to get a "color story" on the reaction from neighboring residents and businesses. After interviewing some people in a neighboring trailer park, I found myself way closer to the remains of the fire then I think officials wanted me to be. I quickly snapped some photos of the wreckage and firefighters cleaning up.

I snapped this photo at 2009's Northwestern Dance Marathon (an annual 30-hour charity dance), which raised $576,000 for Project Kindle - a foundation which holds camps for youth affected by HIV/AIDS. As the event ended and celebratory balloons rained upon the dancers, this 15-year-old camper held up the ceremonial check. His expression was certainly less gleeful than many of the other campers and dancers, but reflected the importance of the charity.
